Safe winter driving tips (1).png

Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union has a new savings program to offer in 2016!

Available exclusively to members at participating Minnesota credit unions, WINcentive™ Savings is a new prize-linked savings account that offers prize drawing entries in return for each tine account holders increase their savings balance by $25 (up to 4 entries per month*). State prize drawings occur monthly, quarterly, and yearly - from $100 up to the grand prize of $5,000! In addition to the statewide drawings, MMFCU is also offering $50 monthly drawings exclusively for our members.

Additionally, 36 percent of Americans have not saved a penny towards their retirement. These percentages have increased since 2013, despite improvements in employment and wages.
Since 2009, credit unions in the U.S. offering prize-linked savings accounts have helped over 50,000 members save $94 million.

In 2015, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton signed a Minnesota Credit Union Network-sponsored bill that allows Minnesota’s credit unions to offer prize-linked savings (PLS) accounts.

The WINcentive Savings account at Mid-Minnesota is designed to help member improve money habits in a whole new way that actually makes saving fun. Members feel rewarded by watching their savings grow and experience the excitement of the prize drawings. And unlike playing the lottery, nothing is lost with WINcentive Savings. Mid-Minnesota Participated in a Statewide “Day of Kindness”

On Columbus Day, October 12, 2015, Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union was one of 14 credit unions who joined forces through an orchestrated day of events to spread kindness in communities across the state.

Mid-Minnesota took advantage of its closure on this federal holiday to help build a Habitat Home located at 1521 Maple Street Southeast in Brainerd. MMFCU had 25 builders working a four hour shift. There were also staff volunteers providing and serving lunch to everyone on the job site that day.

“We wanted to give back to our communities and Habitat for Humanity is of particular importance to MMFCU. Not that long ago, MMFCU staff participated in the first ever Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity Women Build project!” said President/CEO of MMFCU, Chuck Albrecht.

Credit unions subscribe to the foundational philosophy of “People Helping People,” which is demonstrated by our cooperative structures, support of financial education, and active engagement within our communities. Around the state, nearly 1,000 credit union employees dedicate more than 6,200 total volunteer hours to scatter kindness in our communities. Participating credit unions estimated that they collectively impacted more than 18,000 people through their efforts!

“I was proud to see the credit union outreach that took place, which is really an extension of what credit unions do all year long,” said Albrecht.

The statewide day of kindness was inspired by Plus It Forward Day, an event created by Affinity Plus Federal Credit Union in 2013. This is anticipated to be the first of many collaborative community outreach days conducted by Minnesota credit unions, which are local, trusted, not-for-profit financial cooperatives.

Holiday Promotions at Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union

Holiday Promotions.jpg

The holidays are right around the corner. Are you ready for a season of parties, shopping and gift giving? From meals to gifts, it can be overwhelming.

Holiday meals or parties can make your grocery costs soar, not to mention all the prep work! Create your menu ahead of time, and as family members and friends ask “what can they bring,” you will have a suggestion and give yourself some extra time out of the kitchen.

Last minute and impulsive gift purchases can do havoc on your budget. Make a list of all the people you are purchasing for with ideas and the maximum you are going to spend for each. Start your shopping by doing some research; get an idea of what the current prices are on the items you hope to buy, that way when you are shopping you know if you are getting a “deal” or not.  Black Friday can offer very good discounts, just be sure to plan your purchases in advance.

Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union is here to help take some of the financial stress away for the holiday season if needed. There are several ways MMFCU can help.  We offer a Holiday Cash Loan, VISA Credit Card or the ultimate versatile gift for those “hard to buy for” people, the MMFCU VISA Gift Card.

Holiday Cash Loans are available now through December 24 with a minimum of $500 and a maximum of $1,000 per individual or up to $2,000 jointly with rates as low as 3.99% APR for those with an active MMFCU checking account relationship with auto pay. The Holiday Cash loan will then be paid back over a 10-month period. Holiday Cash dollars can be used for your holiday purchases anywhere you want to shop.

VISA Classic & Reward Credit Cards allow you to take advantage of a 1.99% APR introductory rate on all your holiday purchases. This could be a better option than high interest rate retail store card solicitations you will get while shopping!

VISA Gift Cards
Added Security - Replaceable if lost or stolen.
Available for any amount between $5 and $750.
Accepted Worldwide - Just like cash.

If you currently have a loan at MMFCU check out Mid-Minnesota’s Holiday Skip-A-Payment program which allows you a quick and convenient way of finding some cash in your pocket over the next few months. With this program, qualified MMFCU borrowers may be able to skip up to two payments on a variety of MMFCU loans, including, but not limited to new and used auto, boat, RV and more.

If the holiday “spending” season caught you by surprise this year, make a resolution to yourself to be more prepared for the 2016 season. MMFCU can help you set up a separate savings account with automatic deposits or open a VISA Rewards Cards so that you can start earning points towards merchandise, travel or cash back in 2016. There are additional tips for holiday spending at America Saves.org, on Beating the holiday Financial Blues.

Bottom line, we wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving and peaceful holiday season.

Picking a Home Equity Loan that is Right for You

Home Equity Loan is when a borrower uses the equity of their home as collateral. This type of loan is often used for home renovations or repairs, but you are not limited to just that! Many people use their equity for additional expenses, such as college tuition, a vacation, debt consolidation and more. If you are a homeowner and find yourself short on funds, a Home Equity Loan could be the right fit for your needs.

At Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union, we offer a vast variety of Home Equity Loan options. We dare you to compare! Below we have outlined four reasons why one loan may be a potentially better fit for you over another:

Traditional Home Equity

The Traditional Home Equity Loan allows borrowers to lock in a fixed rate. You can borrow against the equity in your home for virtually any reason, such as your dream vacation to Europe or even a new car. Plus, the interest may be tax-deductible!

Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC)

If you need more flexibility, our HELOC plan may be the best fit. Similar to a traditional Home Equity Loan, the HELOC provides you access when you need. And, you only make monthly payments based on your balance after advances. This line of credit is good for everyday purchases both big and small. MMFCU’s HELOC is a variable rate loan.

Not Enough Equity in Your Home?

Ask about our Property Improvement Loan! If you are interested in increasing the value of your home or property, then this loan may be the best option. This is a great way to get the financing you need to build an addition to your home, remodel your kitchen or repair the siding without any built up equity.

Interest ONLY Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC)

This loan is great if you are interested in the Home Equity Line of Credit, but are looking for smaller payments. This is very similar to a standard HELOC with a different payment plan that may better suit your budget, since you are only required to pay the monthly interest due on the balance. It is important to note that interest only payments will not pay off the amount borrowed; therefore a balloon payment will result.

One of the best benefits to a NEW Home Equity Loan at MMFCU is that there are NO CLOSING COSTS! If you’re interested in more information on applying for a Home Equity Loan with Mid-Minnesota, check out our website for current rates and payment plans. Or, stop by one of our convenient Central Minnesota locations to apply in person or fill out one of our online applications.

October is National Co-operative Month

October has been national co-operative month since 1930. Co-ops span all industries including credit unions, dairy operations, health care and housing. There are more than 29,000 co-ops across the United States. Mid-Minnesota Credit Union falls under this umbrella. Some co-ops are not just small and in rural areas. Large national co-ops include Sunkist, Ace Hardware and Land O’ Lakes.

Co-ops start to help people meet a need in their area. It’s not about making money. People who use or deliver services are members of the co-op. Their participation is the key to the co-op’s success. Co-ups exist to serve their communities first and bring in quality goods and services to its members. Joining a co-up is a great choice for buying local and keeping jobs in the community. Some co-ops even pay their members if business is going good.

Members always maintain democratic control of their co-op, which means they vote on fellow members to be on the board of directors at an annual meeting. Members have an equal say in the co-op’s operations and future.

Co-ops give their members a voice in the community and help make a difference. Minnesota was one of the first states to enact a law authorizing credit unions and the first state to celebrate an official co-op month in 1948. Minnesota is also home to the most co-ops and co-op memberships in the country.

Mid-Minnesota Credit Union takes pride in serving Becker, Cass, Crow Wing, Douglas, Norman, Morrison, Todd, Wadena and Otter Tail Counties. If you live, work, worship or attend school in any of those geographic locations, you’re eligible for membership. If you have a blood relative in these areas, you’re also eligible for membership.

Should you meet any of these guidelines, a simple $5 deposit will make you a member/owner of Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union, which will allow you to apply for any of our hundreds of free and low-cost services.

Smart Savings for Smart Kids: How to Back-to-School Shop the Smart Way

Preparing for back-to-school shopping can seem minor in comparison to Christmas shopping, but parents easily spend hundreds of dollars preparing their child for the school year. How can you get your kids prepared for the school year and stay on budget? Read below for smart spending tips for back-to-school shopping.

Boys in a classroom.jpg

Take an Inventory: Before you dash to the store, keep in mind that the best place for back-to-school shopping may be in your own house. Check to see what your child can reuse for the school year.

Tips for Clothes: Work the double duty of back-to-school shopping and organizing your child’s closet. Go through everything, and make piles for tossing anything with holes and stains, donating or handing down what doesn’t fit, and of items to mend. Make a list of what basics and how many of each item your child needs. An alternative to donating clothing is to hold a clothing swap with 6-10 other families with similar aged kids, which can be an easy way to get new clothes and is an excuse to socialize. Despite what your child thinks, they won’t need a brand new wardrobe. Dresses and tanks can be layered with warm-weather clothing, and a closet full of basics will make mixing and matching much easier.

Tips for Supplies: Check your house for excess collections of classroom supplies. It’s likely that they can reuse rulers, calculators, and compasses, and can gather markers, pencils, pens, or paper for their school supplies list.

Tips for Storage: Backpacks, sports bags, and lunch bags suffer heavier wear and tear than clothing and supplies. Determine if they only need a major washing and mending or if a new one is necessary. Amazon and discount department stores have excellent selections at inexpensive prices.

Girl with backpack.jpg
Set a Budget: Once you separate what you have from what you need, set a steadfast budget. This will make the greatest difference in savings, and will prevent you from overspending. Involve your kids in this step to help them learn to spend smartly. Itemize your list of necessities on a whiteboard, and they can visualize if they want to spend more on the latest designer sneakers or on a printed backpack.

Develop a Strategy: To get the best deals, employ a variety of smart savings tactics. Keep track of sales, use coupons, rewards points, and savings apps. Check flyers and coupons for price matching so you can save on gas money, as well. You can even shop online for many back-to-school deals and utilize comparison shopping and free shipping deals to get the best bang for your bucks.

Buy in Bulk: Shopping at Costco and Sam’s Club for supplies can help save you a bundle down the road. Another benefit? Your child will have a stash of extra pencils and paper to use for the rest of the year.

What’s Necessary Now? A pro-tip to keep in mind: Determine what your child needs the first week of school, and then wait until after the rush of back-to-school spending. Killer deals on school supplies start as early as the middle of September.

While you are shopping with your kids, keep in mind that is a great time to teach some valuable smart spending tips. Help them to stick to the supply list. Let them spot price differences between items. Have them determine what’s a want and what’s a need.

Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union also offers fantastic resources for you to practice smart savings and will be proactive in helping your kids develop excellent savings and spending habits. Our Financial Education resources can help develop your child’s first savings accounts whether they are preparing to buy a bike, car, or college tuition. Smart spending habits can start in the back-to-school shopping aisle.

Keeping Your Identity Where it Belongs- With You

Horror stories are abundant when it comes to identity theft. If you haven’t already fallen victim to the slippery tricks of hackers, it is likely that you know someone who has. If the concept of identity theft is new to you, we are about to disrupt your happy place with a measured dose of reality. Your identity will thank us later.

No one is exempt from the threat of identity theft, and luck is no longer enough to save your identity. Forty-four percent of all identity theft and fraud involves online transactions of some form; anyone with a computer or smartphone now has cause for concern. With a little bit of caution and a few heeded warnings, we will help you banish the potential nightmare of identity theft out of your mind and help you gain confidence in your spending. The FTC touts a catchy reminder when it comes to identity theft protection; SHRED.

-Strengthen passwords. Compose differing passwords for each password protected site, each password comprised of a minimum of eight characters with a mix of letters, numbers, symbols, and capitalizations and lowercase. Be sure to update and change your passwords often.

-Handle sensitive personal information with extreme care. Refrain from giving out any personal information unless absolutely necessary, taking particular caution with transactions involving your social security number. Only provide your SSN for tax, credit, or employment reasons, and inquire as to how that information will be used and whether it will be shared with other parties.

-Read credit reports frequently. Using a verified credit reporting service, keep close tabs on your financials and your credit history to ensure no one has obtained your personal information and opened accounts with your name. Track purchases via your online banking system to catch any unfamiliar transactions quickly, and know your pertinent billing cycles. In the event that one fails to reach you, contact the specific creditor immediately.

-Empty your purse or wallet of any non essential personal information such as social security cards, passports, or notes and receipts containing personal information or passwords.

-Discuss identity theft with your friends and loved ones and pass along these tips to help protect others from fraud.

Along with the FTC’s SHRED campaign, here are a few more tips to protect yourself and those you love:

-Reduce the number of preapproved credit card offers you receive in the mail by calling 885-5OPT- OUT

-Be aware of the type and amount of personal information you or your loved ones share over social media. Heavily trafficked sites such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn contain large amounts of personal identifiers that can be used by hackers and internet perusers alike to authenticate your stolen identity.

-Utilize a firewall, antivirus or antispyware software on your computer, and secure your wireless network. Be aware of any personal information that is stored on your mobile device. Secure your device with a strong password and enable your phone’s autolock feature to protect your identity in the event that it is lost or stolen.

-Shred all documents containing personal information or identifiers, especially documents listing your social security number, bank and credit card statements, medical records and sensitive information. Many communities offer local shredding events.

Mid-Minnesota and Paper Storm are sponsoring Community Shred Days throughout this spring and summer. Stop by MMFCU’s parking lot to have your sensitive documents shredded for free! Take a look at our link to all upcoming events for a complete list of dates and locations for free and secure shredding!

Identity theft does not have to be your reality. By exercising targeted caution, you can stave off potential identity fraud and all of its nasty side effects. Keep your identity where it safely belongs- with you.

MMFCU Celebrates National Financial Literacy Month and National Credit Union Youth Month!

At Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union, we’ve made it a priority this month to talk to our members about the importance of financial literacy and establishing healthy financial habits. Throughout the year, we give our members resources at our branches, and online, to access educational materials that will help them accomplish this, but during April, we are putting a special emphasis on this.

If you are coming up with a plan for big events in your life, if you are working on conquering debt, or if you are looking to get the most out of your credit union membership, you can find valuable tools and information on the Financial Education page of our website. If you want to attend special educational workshops about home loans, construction loans, identity theft and more, you can find out when the next one will be at a branch near you on our Upcoming Events page.

We haven’t forgotten about our youngest members! This year’s theme for National Credit Union Youth Month is "Wild About Saving" and we will have stickers and coloring sheets at all branch locations throughout the month of April. By working with our youth, we hope to provide them with valuable financial tools and information to help get our youngest members “Wild About Saving.”

For more information about this special month, go to the National Credit Union Foundation website, stop by a MMFCU branch near you, or visit our website for valuable tools and information.

Transform, Transition, or Treat Yourself to a New, Improved Home

Have you been thinking about making some changes to your home? Remodeling or renovating your home has never been easier with a Home Equity Loan from Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union. We have many great options to choose from, including our Traditional Home Equity Loan, Home Equity Line of Credit and Property Improvement Loan.

The Traditional Home Equity Loan allows borrowers to lock into a fixed rate. You can borrow against the equity in your home for any reason -- not only home improvements -- and enjoy tax-deductible interest!

If you need more flexibility in your borrowing, our Traditional Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) may be a better fit. Similar to a traditional home equity loan, the HELOC gives you access when you need it and you only need to pay monthly payments based on your balance after advances. The HELOC is a variable rate program.

If you like the Traditional HELOC, but want to make smaller payments, MMFCU also offers an Interest-Only Home Equity Line of Credit. It offers the same great features as the Traditional HELOC, but with smaller payments because borrowers are only required to pay the monthly interest due based on the balance.
Are you wanting to increase the value or equity of your home? Our Property Improvement Loan is a great option. You can build a shed, construct a deck, remodel the kitchen, pave the driveway or fix the roof with a loan that fits your needs.

For more information about everything related to home loans, from the basics, to current rates, to purchasing or refinancing, visit our convenient and educational Home Loan Center. We’ve pooled together resources and information and condensed it all into one, centralized location. It has all the best resources you need to make your home dreams come true!

You can apply for any of our home equity or improvement loans online, at one of our convenient locations, or over the phone. No matter where you are in your financial journey, you can lean on us to help you build the best future for you. Your dreams are within reach!

Equal Housing Lender. Subject to credit approval. Consult your tax advisor about deductibility options. See rates page for current rates. The HELOC is a variable rate product based upon the Prime Rate. The maximum HELOC rate is 18.0% APR. Home equity programs may be subject to nominal closing costs of approximately $150 per $20,000 borrowed. No closing costs apply to new money only

MMFCU Merges With Twin Valley Branch

Spring is synonymous with new life, growth and possibilities. It’s a time that brings out the best in many people. When the landscape begins to change and the sun shines a little brighter. Ironically, the season upon us also parallels a season that our credit union has embarked upon.

After a special membership meeting in Twin Valley, members of the Pine to Prairie Federal Credit Union voted to approve a merge with Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union. We are so excited about this partnership and are happy to announce this merger!
Valerie Riepe, Assistant Branch Manager

Much like MMFCU, Pine to Prairie was created nearly 60 years ago by hard-working people who wanted an alternative banking option where they, truly, had a say. MMFCU is proud to be able to offer additional credit union services to the people of Twin Valley and all the surrounding areas.

The horizon for MMFCU is looking bright. Along with the Twin Valley merger, we also finalized plans to open a full-service location in the heart of Detroit Lakes. This will provide us with an opportunity to share the credit union difference even more. With these two additions, MMFCU has now expanded its Field of Membership to serve all of Becker, Cass, Crow Wing, Douglas, Norman, Morrison, Todd, and Wadena counties; as well as the following townships in Otter Tail County: Blowers and Paddock and the Cities of Aitkin, McGregor, and Palisade, in addition to various townships in Aitkin County.

Some of our members may have reservations, as a once small town cooperative continues to grow and expand its reach and membership -- however, we can assure you that you can still expect the same friendly, hometown service you have come to expect at each of our branch locations. We are, and continue to be, People Helping People.

In fact, as our membership continues to grow, this growth will result in MMFCU being able to give back even more to our member/owners in the form of lower interest rates, increased savings rates, and free and low cost services. We will remain faithful to returning profits to our members. It’s truly a win-win for everyone involved.

Five Ways an RV or Boat Can Improve Your Summer!

In Minnesota, we have plenty of reasons to enjoy the summer -- over 10,000 sparkling blue reasons, in fact! The problem is, we only have a short time to enjoy our beautiful lakes each year. Make the most out of your short summer months with a boat or RV! At Mid Minnesota Federal Credit Union, we make it easier to live your dream with low rates and cash back on select loans! In case you needed any more persuasion, we have our top five reasons why having a boat or RV can improve your summer!

  1. Making memories - Spending time on the lake, up north or traveling cross country isn’t just time spent -- it’s memories made! Sure, you’ll remember what you did or where you went, but the most precious memories are with the friends and family you spent your time with. It’s quality time with the people you care about, away from the television and video games.
  2. Good exercise - Chances are, if you’re in a boat or traveling in an RV, you’re going to be outside! Whether you’re water skiing, camping, hiking, fishing or tubing, you are giving yourself the exercise and fresh air your body needs.
  3. Stress relief - Going on a vacation or being on the lake is a stress reliever in itself, but there are more ways it can leave you feeling relaxed refreshed! You don’t have to worry about the stress of air travel -- no lost luggage, missing flights, or delayed flights! Your vacation is ready when you are.
  4. Save money - With an RV or boat, you already have your vacation! You don’t need to spend money on a hotel, plane tickets, amusement park tickets, etc. You always have the fun with you, all you need to do is pick a destination and go. You can even save money on food by stocking your kitchen in your RV (food tastes better cooked over a campfire anyways).
  5. See the country - When your lodging is on wheels and your entertainment is in tow, you can pretty much go anywhere! Even though Minnesota has a lot of beauty and a lot of fun places to set up camp, the open road is always calling your name.

Whether you’re ready to purchase your first boat or RV, or if you’d like to finance your current loan, MMFCU is here to help. We can finance you with a great low rate or refinance you to a more manageable payment. Whatever your needs are, we’re here to help you get ready for summer. Stop by a local branch or call us today, and make sure to get your flip flops and sunglasses packed!
